Gravity Sculpture Lighting Design / Equilibrium

Equilibrium / Gravity Sculpture Lighting Series

"Equilibrium" is a project that explores sculpture through thermoforming, studying material stretch properties and controlling gravity distribution to achieve a balanced state where gravity interacts with the material to create tension, resulting in natural curves unattainable through other methods. The finished sculpture retains its original smooth texture on the outer surface, while the inner surface is textured delicately through sandblasting. When illuminated, the undulating surface of the sculpted material creates subtle brightness and shadow variations based on the distance from the light source.

The fascinating aspect of gravity sculpture lies in its independence from molds, instead adopting a sculpting method that minimizes external interference. This approach yields incredibly natural curved surfaces, unlike those achieved through other molding techniques. Another characteristic is its adaptability; by controlling or altering factors such as the shape and size of the rings, their installation positions, the weight of suspended objects, or the heating temperature, different shapes can be produced. Each sculpture thus possesses its unique qualities, presenting the possibility of quantifying sculpture and enabling a project where products coexist with artistic expression.
